Jones calls for return to non-lawyer arbitrators; by Alison Ross

Notwithstanding a long history of arbitrators being chosen for subject matter expertise, the prevalence of lawyers as arbitrators has been notable in both commercial domestic and international arbitration. The appointment of Michael Tonkin as the Vice President of Ciarb signifies a shift, as he is set to become the first non-lawyer since 2008 as President in 2027.
In this year’s Ciarb Australia Annual Lecture, Prof Doug Jones AO, a distinguished Chartered Arbitrator, a Companion and former Global President of Ciarb, will consider this trend. He will provide an historic perspective, critically analyse the current landscape and propose strategies to enhance the diversity of expertise in arbitral appointments.
This examination aims to foster a more inclusive and varied pool of arbitrators, potentially reshaping the future of arbitration practices.
